Sue Ross Recruitment are seeking a dedicated  Criminal Defence Paralegal to join a busy and well‑established Criminal Department, working across Sheffield, Rotherham, and Barnsley offices. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and is passionate about delivering high‑quality defence representation.

The Role

As a Criminal Defence Paralegal, you will play a vital role in supporting solicitors and managing your own caseload. You will assist clients at every stage of the criminal justice process, providing clear, practical advice and ensuring they receive exceptional support during what can be a challenging time.

Key Responsibilities

• Case Management — Handling a varied caseload covering the full spectrum of criminal matters.
• Police Station Representation — Attending police stations to advise and represent clients at critical stages. Accreditation is preferred, though we will consider candidates willing to undertake the accreditation process.
• Legal Research — Conducting thorough research to support case strategy and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, case law, and procedure.
• Drafting & Documentation — Preparing legal documents with accuracy, clarity, and attention to detail.
• Client Care — Building strong client relationships, taking instructions, preparing statements, and assisting with mitigation.
• Communication & Liaison — Working collaboratively with colleagues, external agencies, and clients to progress matters efficiently.

About You

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

• Experience working within criminal defence law
• Experience representing clients at the police station (or willingness to gain accreditation)
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
• Excellent communication and client care skills
• A professional, empathetic, and resilient approach to your work
